Abstract

The main purpose of this paper is to introduce the essay written by Carlos Arnaudo, student of Philosophy in the UBA XXII program at the seat of the University located in Ezeiza Penitentiary. The context of production of his work is intrinsically connected with its contents. Therefore, we have included a brief introduction, written by the teachers of the Philosophical Essay Workshop –the framework in which this text was written–, in order to show the pedagogical roll of essays in Philosophy teaching, especially if we keep in mind the educational trajectories of the students in context of confinement.

Arnaudo’s essay reflects on the role the University plays in the construction of a subjectivity marked by the social and institutional expectation that makes the thinking process automatic to the point of its cancellation. It attempts to highlight the belligerent coexistence between the academic and penitentiary spheres, and exhibits the difficult task that students face when attending their classes. Nevertheless, the essay also shows the deep gratification that can be provided by a community of teachers and students ready to confront many obstacles and to privilege a bond that opens new horizons.
